Welcome Home Bishop’s Manor

Welcome Home Bishop’s Manor

May 20, 2022 | Events, News

On May 13th, we hosted our first in-person event since the onset of the pandemic to celebrate the first anniversary of Bishop’s Manor. We had a wonderful time sharing this milestone with our community.

One year after completing Bishop’s Manor, we are fully leased, providing affordable housing to 175 Calgarians who have chosen to make this beautiful building their home.

We were grateful to be joined by the Honourable Minister Josephine Pon, MLA Jeremy Nixon and Deputy Mayor Councillor Jennifer Wyness, together with donors, building partners, sector colleagues, employees, and tenants. Tours of the building’s facilities followed the speeches. Guests were shown our terrace, custom bike room, the 2nd floor Wellness Room with its mural “Honouring the Buffalo”, as well as a one-bedroom suite.

We heard from our emcee Forward Housing CEO Gary McNamara, and Robert Bedin, our Board Chair on the diversity of the Bishop’s Manor tenant community and the collaboration that funded the construction. Elder Jackie Bromley of the Kainai Nation, who joined us for our ground-breaking in 2019 and our Wellness Room blessing last year, led us in a prayer and shared teachings on land and reconciliation. Thank you to Maggie Schmiemann of Mount Royal for all her help planning this fantastic event.

Bishop’s Manor arose out of solid partnerships, proving that collaboration from all levels of government and the private sector is critical to solving the affordable housing crisis in Calgary.

In the words of our Chair, “the need for more affordable housing is still there.” Thank you to all that support our mission to create homes where everyone can thrive.
