Affordable housing is the key to helping low-income Calgarians thrive.
Help our city’s most vulnerable by donating today.
How you can help
Rental rates remain unaffordable for many low-income households, particularly those working minimum wage jobs, seniors who rely solely on government pensions and those on other forms of social assistance. Additionally, Calgary has the fewest non-market units of any major Canadian city with only 3.6% of Calgary’s housing supply being below market vs the National average of 6%. High rental rates paired with low affordable housing stock has created an affordable housing crisis in our city. In Calgary alone, over 80,000 households struggle to cover their housing costs.
Generating Affordable Possibilities (GAP)
Many of the families we house report having had to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table or purchasing necessary medication. We don’t believe that anyone should have to sacrifice basic needs to stay housed. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Forward Housing has given many households the gift of stability and a safe and affordable place to call home.
Update: On August 1st, 2021, thanks to our donors’ incredible support of the GAP Program, we will be updating the rental model at Columbus Place to offer ALL households affordable rent. With a rental floor in place, tenants will have their rent calculated based on their gross annual income and will pay either 30% of their income towards rent or the rental floor, whichever is higher. We are thrilled to be able to offer this to our tenants, but the hard work has only begun. To continue to offer affordable rents to all households, the GAP Program needs to raise approximately $76,000 per year. Donate today and join us in creating homes where everyone can thrive!
Calgary needs more affordable housing. We have the lowest percentage of non-market units amongst major Canadian cities and most of the housing stock is more than 30 years old.
Creating new affordable housing through the construction of new buildings and conversion of existing market units is critical to ensuring the sustainability of affordable housing in our community.
Forward Housing Association was part of the Calgary Collaborative Capital Campaign for Affordable Housing (formerly known as the RESOLVE Campaign). While the success of that campaign allowed us to build Bishop’s Manor, the city still needs approximately 15,000 Affordable Housing units to reach the national average. Forward Housing is committed to raising capital to create more affordable housing for those who need it most.

Welcome Home Bundles
When low-income households move into a new apartment, they often show up with minimal possessions and may not have the means to purchase household essentials.
In order to welcome our new tenants home, we are creating ‘Welcome Home’ bundles for each household. We need assistance in filling these bundles with as much local flavour as possible. Whether you can donate gifts in kind, offer bulk items at a discounted rate, coupons for your business, or provide direct financial support for this initiative, you can rest assured that your generosity will make a tremendous difference to a household in need who is settling into a new community.
Our goal is to be able to offer all households a welcome home bundle, but we need your help. Please click here to make a financial contribution, or, If you’d like to make a gift donation, please E-Mail email@example.com
For some of our residents rent still takes up most of their income.
Through the GAP (Generating Affordable Possibilities) program, you can subsidize rent to residents, so rent is no more than 30% of their income. Rent subsidy allows residents to afford basic necessities, such as food, medicine or extra-curricular activities or a Christmas gift for their children.
From surviving to thriving.
Help us bridge the gap from surviving to thriving, donate today.

We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to all our 2020-2021 donors and funders whose support allows us to create affordable homes where everyone can thrive. Thank you, we couldn’t do what we do without your support!
